The Communion of Saints

Updated: Apr 6, 2022

UNDER THE FIG TREE

A hermit observing the world from his cave

Who are the saints? They are those who lived lives that were acceptable to God, and have gone on to their eternal reward in heaven. Though they would have had their share of sins while on earth, they have repented and been restored to God.

But a top Church hierarch says that even those who are grave sinners are part of the communion of saints. He says that the communion of saints includes those who deny the faith, who deny their baptism, who persecute the Church, who blaspheme. If so, then there will be no one in hell, if there is even a hell.

This is wrong teaching. This is heresy.

The communion of saints (and would-be saints) comprises the faithful on earth, the blessed in heaven, and the souls in purgatory. It excludes those who are in mortal sin and are unrepentant.

How we long to be in the company or communion of saints! As such, we strive to obey God’s will, seek holiness, and even look to Christian perfection.
