Know The Lord! (Thought for the Day Part 21)

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34

God has done an awesome and mysterious thing—He has entered into covenant with us. “I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” (v.33c). The divine becomes intimately connected with the human. The Spirit inhabits the flesh. The hereafter becomes real in the here and now.

We have our part to play. The covenant is bestowed unilaterally, but is lived bilaterally. God expects His people to live according to His ways. “I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts.” (v.33b). God does not fall short in instructing us—through our interaction with Jesus in prayer, through guidance and wisdom by the Holy Spirit, by His word in the Bible, and by the instruction of Christ’s body on earth, the Church.

Unfortunately, most Catholics are far from God. Many do not know His law. Those who do often transgress. “They broke my covenant, though I was their master” (v.32c). Many do not realize what a great thing God has done for us. Like our ancestors-in-faith, God “took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt.” (v.32b). God has led us out of darkness and sin. God as Father has taken the hand of His children and led them to salvation in Jesus and empowerment by the Holy Spirit.

Thus Catholics need to be re-evangelized. They need to hear the gospel proclaimed anew. Then they need to be further formed in the faith. They need to meet Christ, to live Christ, and to share Christ. They need to know and be taught how to live the covenant. Thus can they be brought back from darkness into God’s marvelous light. “I will forgive their iniquity and no longer remember their sin.” (v.34c). They will be restored and renewed.

That is the fullness of the call. When this happens, then we can look to a renewed and vibrant Church. We can hope for the ideal situation, as God intends: “They will no longer teach their friends and relatives, ‘Know the Lord!’ Everyone, from least to greatest, shall know me” (v.34a-b).

Let us go about the work of New Evangelization with a passion, so that everyone will know the Lord.
